Cottleville is one of the oldest towns in St. Charles County.  As far back as 1800 there existed a group of houses located near the spot where the old  Boone's Lick Road (now Missouri State Route N) crossed the Dardenne Creek.  This town, located along the old Boone's Lick Road, was first settled by Captain Warren G. Cottle who secured a land grant from the Spanish in 1798.

Dr. Warren G. Cottle died in 1811 leaving his extensive farmlands to his children.  One of his sons, Lorenzo, inherited about 200 acres of land on both sides of the Dardenne Creek.  in 1839, he named the property lying on the south side of the stream the town of Cottleville in honor of his deceased Father.

David Pitman wan another prominent landowner with adjoining land to the Cottle's. In the 1850's and 1860's, he laid out two subdivisions to the town. The Village of Cottleville prospered so that at one time it had a population of about 500 people, eleven places of business, and two hotels.

It has been steadily working in phases on the new 37 acre Cottleville Legacy Park. Once completed, the park will contain an outdoor amphitheater, basketball courts, children's playground, dog park, football, soccer, and volleyball courts, and multi-purpose shelters for family gatherings.
